Pathfinder and Hammerhead workboats

HMNZS Matataua utilises two Surtees 7.5m Workmate Hardtop aluminium launches named Pathfinder and Hammerhead, assigned to the Maritime Hydrographic Group and Clearance Dive Group respectively.

The launches have a high-speed capability and can take eight personnel or five divers with diving kit. They have a side workstation fitted to accommodate hydrographic survey computer systems and can be fitted with a removable davit crane and electric winch.

Pathfinder and Hammerhead can be loaded as cargo aboard an Offshore Patrol Vessel or HMNZS Canterbury. They are easily transportable by road using a boat trailer and are able to be launched from most recreational boat ramps in New Zealand, or beach launched and recovered.
