“I decided to join the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) because it brings me a lot of pride to serve my country. It also gives opportunities no other occupation could give you.”

One of the contributing factors Aircraftman Lennox Manukia joined the RNZAF were the stories of his grandparents who served in the Second World War.

“My parents have told me stories about them serving the country which was an inspiration to me. It was one of the reasons that helped me decide on choosing the NZDF as my career path,” he said.

Aircraftman Manukia has just completed the 12-week recruit course at RNZAF Base Woodbourne and will soon start his trade training.

“I’m expecting to be challenged a lot throughout my career, especially during my trade training. I know that I will be continued to be pushed outside my comfort zone and have opportunities to improve myself,” he said.

While the transition from civilian to military life has been an adjustment he has enjoyed a sense of accomplishment on the course.

“I have enjoyed the connections and strong bonds during the tough times and the good times.

“The success I have felt through passing various parts of the course, such as the operational fitness test and weapons qualifications has been great.”

He said he is looking forward to seeing his family following graduation and showing them how much he has grown as a person.

“I am looking forward to continuing my development, and the many opportunities that my career path will open after my trade training.

“I hope to one day deploy overseas and experience different cultures and countries. I am also looking forward to progressing my career and take on leadership roles and go up the ranks.”

Aircraftman Manukia said anyone wanting to join need to have a strong mental attitude.

“There will be times where you will be put under pressure, so it is important to be mentally strong.”
