Service Medals
Military service has unique requirements – a commitment to serving the Crown, being liable for operational service, and being subject to military discipline and the demands and constraints of the military lifestyle. The New Zealand Defence Service Medal was instituted in 2011. It closed a long-standing gap in medallic recognition of that service.

NZDF Personnel Archives and Medals (PAM) issues war, operational, and service medals to NZDF former and current service members. Within the limits of the Privacy Act 2020, we also provide advice about medals NZDF former and current service members might be entitled to, and information about which medals have already been issued to them.

COVID-19
On 19 March 2020, New Zealand closed its borders. On 9 April, the Prime Minister announced that a network of Managed Isolation and Quarantine Facilities (MIQFs) would be established, to bring citizens and residents home. The Army, Navy and Air Force have been tasked with supporting the MIQFs, as part of a multi-agency effort run by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
