Culture & Lived Experience

Our people are at the heart of everything we do, and the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) is dedicated to ensuring they feel valued, connected, and part of something that matters. Learn about the networks and programmes that build connection, inclusion, and support for our team, wherever they serve.

Friends for life

Working or serving in the NZDF is more than just a job—it’s about being part of a team that thrives on trust and camaraderie. Our people often face challenging environments and complex tasks, but the strong bonds we form mean we always have each other’s back. These shared experiences create lifelong friendships and connections.

Kia Eke Honoring Te Ao Māori

Kia Eke is NZDF's Te Ao Māori strategy. It seeks to enable and empower our people to explore Te Ao Māori and the Māori world. It expresses our commitment to delivering positive outcomes with and for Māori, both within our organisation and those who support us, from government agencies through to iwi and hapū where our camps, bases and places of work are located.

Fostering Diversity & Inclusion

We are committed to fostering an inclusive culture where everyone feels valued and respected. Initiatives like Wāhine Toa, Tāne Toa, and Operation Respect enhance participation, promote equity, and address harmful behaviours. Together with efforts to improve cultural competency, these programmes help us grow as a diverse and united force.

Celebrating Rewards & Recognition

Rewards and recognition give the NZDF a chance to celebrate and share our people’s success stories while reinforcing our desired culture, behaviours, new ways of working, and the new operating model.

The Person of the Year event is an annual opportunity for the NZDF to honour individual achievements and recognise excellence across the organisation. This event allows our Senior Leadership Team to look back on the past year and celebrate the accomplishments of award winners from all parts of the Defence Force.

Members can be nominated in the following categories: Sailor of the Year, Soldier of the Year, Aviator of the Year, Civilian of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Safety Person of the Year, and Reservist of the Year.

People Led and Purpose Drive

In NZDF, our people are the driving force behind our positive culture.  We proudly support a range of people-led networks that connect, empower and uplift our teams.  These networks create safe and inclusive spaces to share ideas, a sense of belonging and promote equity and respect across the entire force.

  • Gender Networks: Run locally across Navy, Army, Air Force, and Defence Headquarters, these networks support gender equity and inclusive leadership in every corner of the force.
  • Pasifika Network: Celebrating Pasifika culture this network strengthens connection, collaboration, support, and career development for Pasifika people.
  •  Pan-Asian Network: Promoting cultural understanding and connection, the Pan-Asian Network supports those with ties to Asia-Pacific communities, both within New Zealand and beyond.
  •  Pride Network: A vibrant and visible community for our rainbow people, allies, and whānau - this network champions inclusion, wellbeing and visibility for members of rainbow communities across the NZDF.
  •  Neurodiversity Network: Providing peer support, guidance, and resources, this network celebrates the strengths of neurodivergent people and advocates for greater understanding and accessibility.
