Leave entitlements for Civil Staff
The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) offers various leave options for Civil Staff to support their wellbeing and personal responsibilities. This page outlines key leave entitlements, including annual, sick, bereavement, and parental leave, as guided by employment agreements and the Holidays Act 2003.
Civil Staff members are entitled to leave as outlined in their employment agreements and the Holidays Act 2003. Leave is provided to ensure members can rest, recover, and manage personal responsibilities.
Types of leave available to Civilians include:
- Annual Leave. Members are entitled to either 23 or 25 days of annual leave per year, depending on their employment contract. Part-time or short-term employees accrue leave on a pro-rata basis.
- Public Holidays. Members are entitled to public holidays as per the Holidays Act 2003. If required to work on a public holiday, they may receive an additional day off (in lieu) and extra pay.
- Leave Without Pay. If annual leave is exhausted, members may request a period of unpaid leave.
- Sick Leave. Members are entitled to 10 days of sick leave per year, available from their first day of employment. Unused sick leave can accumulate up to a maximum of 90 days.
- Bereavement Leave. Members may take bereavement leave following the death of a family member or someone with whom they had a close relationship.
- Parental Leave. Parental leave may be available for primary carers or their partners when assuming the permanent care of a child under six years old.
These leave options ensure Civilians have the flexibility to balance their work and personal lives while maintaining their wellbeing.
