A Palmerston North man has held off an Australian challenge to emerge the winner of the 1st Battalion RNZIR Top Soldier competition for the New Zealand Army, Ngāti Tūmatauenga.
Private Jonah Ackerman, 20, who is based at Linton Military Camp, was among 82 soldiers participating in a competition designed to identify the top soldier through set challenges in all aspects of their infantry training and their physical and mental resilience.
Set in Waiouru, the competition covered a 33-hour period with phases including fitness tests, combat shooting and weapon handling drills, communication, medical and general knowledge tests and a 34 kilometre route march.
Private Ackerman’s first place pipped a robust performance from two soldiers from the 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, who picked up second and third. Overall, 31 soldiers completed all phases of the competition.
As well as his top-notch infantry soldier skills, his ultra-marathon training was a boost to his physical abilities.

In October, Private Ackerman competed in the Taupo 100km Ultra Marathon, coming 10th. He is now training for the 100km WAI2K Ultra Marathon in Wairarapa this month.
Both his parents were outdoor instructors, and Private Ackerman joined the NZ Army after finishing at Freyberg High School in Palmerston North.
“I enjoyed the outdoors growing up and I would go on my own hunting and hiking adventures. Army seemed like the one of the most successful things to do in that outdoors realm.”
He said everyone is expected to compete in the Top Soldier course, with plenty of preparation from their respective Victor Company NCOs.
“It was good to put all our training into practice, and to see all the lads trying their best and pushing themselves. It was a pleasant surprise at the end to be able to take the win.”
Private Ackerman was a runner before he joined the Army and has only recently got back into it as time permits.
“Army is supportive and they definitely get it. I’m given some leniency doing my Physical Training with extra time for running. I really enjoy doing it.”
His advice to others about the NZ Army is pretty simple.
“The best thing that’s helped me is a positive attitude. Smiling helps. It’s not so bad when you’re smiling.”
