Remuneration for Territorial Force

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) provides a remuneration package for Territorial Force members, reflecting their part-time service. This page outlines the pay structure, allowances, and benefits that fairly compensate their contributions and skills.

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) provides a tailored remuneration package for members of the Territorial Force, reflecting the nature of their part-time or irregular work. Territorial Force members are paid hourly for up to eight hours per approved duty day and receive their pay fortnightly for hours worked in the previous 14 days.

The package includes the following components:

  1. The base salary, which is determined by rank, branch or trade, sector, tier, and pay step:
    1. Sector allocation is based on external market comparisons, valuing NZDF trade skills, qualifications, and experience.
    2. Tier allocation reflects the premium NZDF places on specific trades or skill sets.
    3. Pay steps increase with additional skills, qualifications, and experience.
  2. The military factor, an annual allowance of $18,024 compensates for the unique requirements of military service.
  3. The employer superannuation contribution, a 4% subsidy is provided for members enrolled in a superannuation scheme.
  4. Since Territorial Force members are not entitled to leave, a 10% holiday pay premium is added to their hourly pay.
  5. Members may receive additional pay when undertaking roles requiring a higher rank or advanced skillset, subject to approval.

This structure ensures that the Territorial Force’s contributions are fairly compensated while acknowledging the flexibility of their service.
