International diplomacy and engagement is key for our Defence Force, both in contributing to New Zealand’s security and to maintaining the rules-based international system. Effective defence engagement also supports New Zealand’s broader foreign and economic policy objectives.

Trans-Tasman Talks

Deputy Chief of Navy, Commodore Karl Woodhead, hosted his Royal Australian Navy counterpart, Rear Admiral Matt Buckley, and delegations at the Devonport Naval Base.

Deputy Chief of Navy, Commodore Karl Woodhead, hosted his Royal Australian Navy counterpart, Rear Admiral Matt Buckley, and delegations at the Devonport Naval Base.

The annual Royal Australian Navy - Royal New Zealand Navy Strategic Dialogue, held alternately between the two countries, consolidates five shared working groups focused on strengthening naval cooperation between the two allies.

The goal is to drive enhanced interoperability and interchangeability between the two navies addressing shared challenges and aligning strategic priorities.

This week's talks were extremely successful with agreement on shared outcomes and a commitment to work even more closely on a range of portfolios including training, personnel, operations and capability development.
