Partnerships and engagements

International diplomacy and engagement is key for our Defence Force, both in contributing to New Zealand’s security and to maintaining the rules-based international system. Effective defence engagement also supports New Zealand’s broader foreign and economic policy objectives.

Following on from the visit by the Royal Navy’s Second Sea Lord this week, we have also been privileged to host the Chief of Staff of the Chilean Navy (Armada de Chile).

Vice Admiral Raúl Zamorano, and his delegation were here for Navy-to-Navy talks with our Deputy Chief of Navy, Commodore Karl Woodhead.

The conversations focussed on strategic maritime challenges being faced in a deteriorating environment, and the continuation of the very close partnership enjoyed between the two navies.

While at the Devonport Naval Base, VADM Zamorano and his party received a formal welcome and visited the Damage Control School, Seamanship Training Facility, MESTE and Bridge Simulator.

Of particular interest was the opportunity to view the autonomous systems capability HMNZS Matataua are currently utilising.

Additionally, we were able to work with one of our New Zealand defence industry partners, Hamilton Jet, to facilitate a demonstration to the Chilean Navy delegation of a prototype uncrewed surface vessel, remotely operated by a handheld control on shore.
