The Silver Jubilee Medal 1977

Overview

The Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal 1977 was issued to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne in 1953. 

Description

The medal is silver and circular.  The obverse bears the crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth encircled with the inscription "ELIZABETH II DEI GRA. REGINA FID. DEF." (Latin abbreviation for "Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith"). The reverse features the inscription "THE 25th YEAR OF THE REIGN OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II 6 February 1977" encircled with a crowned wreath.

The ribbon features a central narrow stripe of red within a central blue stripe, bordered by broad stripes of white and edged with a narrow stipe of red.

Eligibility

The 30,000 medals awarded within the United Kingdom included 9,000 to armed forces personnel, with others given to members of the Royal Household and to people engaged in a wide range of activities, including industry, trade, local services, voluntary work, the arts, entertainment and sport.

Recipients

Over 1500 New Zealanders received the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal.  Although the recipients' roles were published in the New Zealand Gazette, their names were not listed.

    The Silver Jubilee Medal 1977 is worn with the Jubilee, Coronation Medals, and New Zealand Commemoration Medals in the New Zealand Order of Wear.  It is always worn after Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation Medal 1953.
