Overview

The New Zealand Suffrage Centennial Medal 1993 was instituted by the New Zealand Government to celebrate 100 years of votes for women in New Zealand.

Description

The New Zealand Suffrage Centennial Medal 1993 is bronze with an antique finish and circular in shape. On the obverse is the crowned Effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.   The reverse bears the inscription "1893 The New Zealand Suffrage Centennial 1993" between a fern frond and a sprig of camellia foliage with a single bloom, stems crossed in the base and tied with a bow.

The ribbon is purple, with narrow central stripes of white, yellow, and white.

There are no clasps or bars for this medal.

The medal was designed by the New Zealand Herald of Arms and manufactured by the Royal Australian Mint.

Eligibility

The New Zealand Suffrage Centennial Medal 1993 was awarded individuals who had, by their virtues and talents, made a recognised contribution to women's rights in New Zealand, to women's issues in New Zealand, or both.

Recipients

The medal was awarded to over 544 selected women and men for their contribution to women's rights in New Zealand, women's issues in New Zealand, or both. The list of recipients was published on Saturday 18 September 1993, the day before Suffrage Day and is available online(external link) at the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet website.

    The New Zealand Suffrage Centennial Medal 1993 is worn with the Jubilee, Coronation, and New Zealand Commemoration Medals in the New Zealand Order of Wear.  It is always worn after the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal.
