The New Zealand Cross (NZC)
Overview
The premier New Zealand award for bravery, the New Zealand Cross is awarded for "acts of great bravery in situations of extreme danger". The new award was instituted in 1999 to replace the George Cross and is similar in design to the New Zealand Cross of 1869. Although intended primarily for civilians, the New Zealand Cross may also be awarded to military personnel in some circumstances.
Description
The New Zealand Cross is a silver cross with straight edges. Each arm bears a six-pointed gold star. At the centre is a wreath of golden New Zealand fern fronds encircling the words "NEW ZEALAND." The reverse features the inscription "FOR BRAVERY - MŌ TE MĀIA". The cross is surmounted by a gold Royal Crown and attached by the letter "V" to a straight silver suspender bar bearing golden fern fronds.
The ribbon is bright blue.
Bars can be awarded for subsequent acts of bravery in situations of extreme danger. The bars are silver and bear two New Zealand fern fronds.
Recipients of this award are entitled to use the post-nominal letters N.Z.C. after their names.
Eligibility
- Civilians and military personnel who undertake acts of great bravery in situations of extreme danger for which a New Zealand Gallantry Award or other award may be inappropriate.
