The George Medal (GM)
Overview
The George Medal (GM) was established in 1940 and is awarded to civilians for acts of bravery which did not merit the award of the George Cross. In 1999, the George Medal was replaced by the New Zealand Bravery Star.
Description
The George Medal is silver in colour and circular in shape. The obverse bears the crowned effigy of the reigning monarch. The reverse features Saint George on horseback slaying the dragon on the coast of England, with the inscription "THE GEORGE MEDAL" around the top edge of the medal.
The ribbon is crimson with five narrow blue stripes.
Recipients are entitled to the post-nominal letters GM.

Wearing this medal
The George Medal is worn with medals for gallantry and bravery in the New Zealand Order of Wear. It is always worn after the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal.

The George Medal is no longer awarded in New Zealand since the introduction of New Zealand's own system of Gallantry and Bravery awards in 1999.
