Life insurance package for NZDF

The Member Insurance Benefits Programme (MIBP)

The New Zealand Defence Force provides a life insurance package for all its NZDF Regular and Reserve Forces and Civilian (permanent and fixed term) members. Extra insurance is available to NZDF family members as well. The Member Insurance Benefits Programme (MIBP) has been tailored by Aon, NZDF’s insurance brokers, and insured by AIA. 

It is structured in a number of Tiers of cover:

  • Tier 1 - Automatic benefits for Regular Forces, Reserve Forces and Civilian members, paid by NZDF.
  • Tier 2 - Additional and top up benefits for Regular Forces, Reserve Forces and Civilian members, paid by the member.
  • Tier 3 - Benefits for the spouse/partners of NZDF members, paid by the member of their partner.
  • Tier 4 - Benefits for former NZDF members (former NZDF Regular Force, Reserve Force and former Civilian members)
  • Tier 5 - Funeral Cover Benefit for the Defence Community.

Domestic - Barracks, Car, Contents, Home insurance and more

Provided by Tower, the InForce Domestic Insurance Scheme provides insurance for your contents while you are living in barracks, and also for your home, contents, and motor. It is designed for your specific needs as NZDF military and civilian personnel and extends to those of you who are retired, or serve as Territorial/Reserve Force personnel, and your families.

Key InForce Domestic Insurance Scheme highlights include:

  • Up to 10% automatic premium discount.
  • Any kit or military equipment issued to you is covered under your contents policy as part of your personal effects.
  • Special extensions to the policy covers, such as automatic storage cover when you are posted are provided, recognising the uniqueness of your working environment.
  • You don’t have to tell us if you move from one base or camp to another until renewal.
  • Multi-policy discounts, and a range of payment frequency options to choose from.

Medical insurance

New Zealand Defence Force values your health and wellbeing and provide you and your family members with access to health insurance from Southern Cross at discounted rates. 

Cover highlights include: 

  • Lower premiums for New Zealand Defence Force personnel and their whānau.
  • Only pay for the first two children (under 21 years) on your policy* – the rest are free!
  • Members of the Regular Forces can take out a special low cost ‘non-claiming’ policy from Southern Cross. Thus, protecting any future pre-existing conditions arising from the date of your joining. In addition, you get all the loyalty benefits that come with being a Southern Cross member, but at a lower cost because you’re not claiming for treatment while you’re with the NZDF. You’ll still get to make the most of other Southern Cross member benefits, including offers on everyday products and services, like dental and optometry.

Leisure Travel Insurance

Allianz Partners provides travel insurance cover at a 10% discounted rate for currently serving and retired members of the Defence community (including spouses and dependent children) undertaking leisure travel. 
The policy covers NZDF members currently residing in New Zealand, as well as:

  • NZDF members deployed and based overseas, in which case the policy will cover you from the place of deployment and the return to that place or New Zealand. To access this, you need to follow the Allianz website link below and use the code “NZDF”, you will receive an NZDF endorsement with your policy (as well as getting the discount) which gives the deployed member an exemption from the requirement to leave from and return to NZ. 
  • NZDF member deployed and based overseas, with spouse and/or dependent children residing in New Zealand. Cover can be taken under this policy; however, two separate policies will need to be issued.

    International policies offer the following standard policy features for NZDF members:

    • Selected cover* for epidemic and pandemic diseases such as COVID-19
    • Cover for medical and repatriation expenses
    • Emergency assistance provided 24/7
    • Replacement cover for baggage items less than 2 years old. Depreciation will be otherwise applied to claims for luggage and personal effects at such rate reasonably determined by Allianz Partners

      • white water rafting in grade 5 or more rivers;
      • scuba diving underwater no greater than 30 metres, providing you hold an open water diving license which is recognised in New Zealand, or you are diving with an instructor licensed for this activity.

    • Increased cover for specified high-value items (Comprehensive only)
    • Cover for pre-existing medical condition(s) (Comprehensive only)

    *There is no cover for claims directly or indirectly arising from or caused by you commencing your travel against the New Zealand Government's advice or against local government advice at your overseas destination.

    *There is no cover for lockdowns, changes in government alert levels, quarantine or mandatory isolation applying to a population or part of a population. As with any travel insurance, disinclination to travel due to fear or change of mind is not covered.

As part of your claim, you may be required to:

  1. provide supporting documentation such as original invoices, receipts, and other vouchers relating to your expenses or loss
  2. produce your policy details
  3. provide all the information we require so that your claim can be considered

You can lodge your claim by calling Allianz Partners on 0800 800 048 (+64 9 486 0048 from overseas) and by submitting the fully completed claim form.

For loss or theft of your baggage or personal effects, you must notify the local police or local government authority within 24 hours, and you must obtain a copy of the incident report.

For loss or damage to your personal baggage whilst in the care of the carrier (airline, bus company etc.), you must notify the carrier immediately and seek compensation.   Once an outcome is received, and a settlement is reached, if you did not receive the total amount claimed from the carrier, you have a provision to claim for the difference.   At this point, you should submit a claim with Allianz Partners, and provide all of the relevant documentation from the carrier, detailing what was covered and what was not covered, providing receipts and as much proof of purchase as possible.

When you call, Allianz Partners require:

  1. your name
  2. your policy number
  3. details describing your emergency
  4. a contact phone number, including an area code
