The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has agreements with leading insurance companies to provide you and your family cover based on your needs and circumstances.

Life insurance package for NZDF

The New Zealand Defence Force provides an insurance package for all its NZDF Regular and Reserve Forces and Civilian (permanent and fixed term) members. The Member Insurance Benefits Programme (MIBP) has been tailored by Aon, NZDF’s insurance brokers, and insured by AIA.

Domestic - Barracks, Car, Contents, Home insurance and more

Provided by Tower, the InForce Domestic Insurance Scheme provides insurance for your contents while you are living in barracks, and also for your home, contents, and motor. It is designed for your specific needs as NZDF military and civilian personnel and extends to those of you who are retired, or serve as Territorial/Reserve Force personnel, and your families.

Key InForce Domestic Insurance Scheme highlights include:

  • Up to 10% automatic premium discount.
  • Any kit or military equipment issued to you is covered under your contents policy as part of your personal effects.
  • Special extensions to the policy covers, such as automatic storage cover when you are posted are provided, recognising the uniqueness of your working environment.
  • You don’t have to tell us if you move from one base or camp to another until renewal.
  • Multi-policy discounts, and a range of payment frequency options to choose from.

Medical insurance

New Zealand Defence Force values your health and wellbeing and provide you with access to health insurance from Southern Cross at discounted rates. Cover highlights include: 

  • Lower premiums for New Zealand Defence Force personnel and their whānau.
  • Only pay for the first two children (under 21 years) on your policy* – the rest are free!
  • Members of the Regular Forces can take out a special low cost ‘non-claiming’ policy from Southern Cross. Thus, protecting any future pre-existing conditions arising from the date of your joining. In addition, you get all the loyalty benefits that come with being a Southern Cross member, but at a lower cost because you’re not claiming for treatment while you’re with the NZDF. You’ll still get to make the most of other Southern Cross member benefits, including offers on everyday products and services, like dental and optometry.

Leisure Travel Cover

Allianz Partners provides travel insurance cover at a 10% discounted rate for currently serving and retired members of the Defence community (including spouses and dependent children) undertaking leisure travel. 
The policy covers NZDF members currently residing in New Zealand, as well as:

  • NZDF members deployed and based overseas, in which case the policy will cover you from the place of deployment and the return to that place or New Zealand. To access this, you need to follow the Allianz website link below and use the code “NZDF”, you will receive an NZDF endorsement with your policy (as well as getting the discount) which gives the deployed member an exemption from the requirement to leave from and return to NZ. 
  • NZDF member deployed and based overseas, with spouse and/or dependent children residing in New Zealand. Cover can be taken under this policy; however, two separate policies will need to be issued.
