Whanganui man chooses variety in career with RNZAF
Whanganui’s Benjamin Conder has always loved aircraft and flying and as his Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) training course proved, was perhaps a bit too strong and fit for a desk job.

Aircraftman Conder has just completed the 12-week recruit course at RNZAF Base Woodbourne, near Blenheim, and will now head to his trade training to become a communications and information systems mechanic.
“One of my highlights from course was being the fastest recruit in the 20kg weighted vest operational fitness test.”
The test requires aviators to wear a 20kg weighted vest designed to mimic the load aviators may be required to carry on a deployment. Males under 30 are required to cover 5km in under 44min 30sec.
Aircraftman Conder, 22, said he chose the RNZAF because he wanted a job where no two days were the same.
“I wanted a job that allows me opportunities to travel, experience different cultures and take on unique challenges is the level of excitement and responsibly that appealed to me the most.
“Being part of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) also comes with a sense of pride for serving your country,” he said.
On leaving school, Aircraftman Conder initially chose to study a Bachelor of Business. While he enjoyed his time at university, he wanted an opportunity for personal and professional growth.
“After my degree I found that I didn’t like being stuck at a desk for hours all day and my future career options didn’t appeal so I started my application to join the Air Force.”
It will be a family affair for Aircraftman Conder as his brother is also in the RNZAF in the same trade. He will continue his trade training at Base Woodbourne and then complete on-the-job training at either Base Ohakea or Base Auckland.
“I am excited to be starting my trade training and progressing through my career,” Aircraftman Conder said.
He said he had so far enjoyed meeting new people and making friends for life in the RNZAF.
“I have also thoroughly enjoyed the physical training classes as they challenge your mental and physical capabilities.”
Aircraftman Conder said the NZDF was filled with great opportunities and a great career option.
“If you do take the leap and join, be a sponge and then take in all the information as everything will serve as useful skills.”
