Posting assistance
During their career with the NZDF, Regular Force members will be posted to new locations, either within New Zealand or overseas. Each permanent posting comes with comprehensive support to help relocate the member, their accompanying family and household.
Eligibility
A posting is considered as permanent under the following conditions:
- Within New Zealand: A permanent posting occurs when a member is assigned to a new region for at least 18 months. Most postings within New Zealand last around three years.
- Overseas: An overseas posting is considered permanent when a member is assigned abroad for at least 10 months. Most overseas postings last between one and three years.

Support provided
Support begins once a posting notice is issued, typically three months before the member’s transfer date.
For postings within New Zealand
NZDF provides the following support for domestic relocations:
- Familiarisation visit for the member to the new location (normally taken before the posting date).
- Relocation of the member and accompanying family to the new location. This includes travel costs, accommodation costs and meal allowances.
- Packing and transport of household and personal effects.
- A transfer grant to assist with costs associated with the move.
- Short term temporary accommodation at the new location, whilst the member arranges permanent accommodation.
- If a members own their own home, contribution towards the costs to sell and purchase a new home.
For overseas postings
NZDF provides additional support for members and families relocating abroad:
- Relocation of the member and accompanying family to the new location, including; travel costs, accommodation costs and meal allowances.
- Packing and transport of household and personal effects.
- Storage of household effects that are not relocated overseas.
- A transfer grant to assist with costs associated with the move.
- Temporary accommodation at the new location, if required
- Furnished accommodation and utilities for the duration of the overseas posting, where the member pays the agreed NZDF domestic rental rate.
- Cost of living allowances and reimbursement of some additional costs for the duration of the overseas posting.
- Medical and dental care for the member and accompanying family, provided to a similar level as the standard of care that is provided in New Zealand.
- Education for accompanying dependant children equivalent of New Zealand year 13 education.
When an overseas posting ends, NZDF assists members and their families in relocating back to New Zealand, including covering relocation and associated costs.
