Spitfire joins RNZAF’s Black Falcons aerobatic team in rare display flight over Whanganui this Sunday

An Air Force Heritage Flight of New Zealand (AFHF NZ) Supermarine Spitfire will join the Royal New Zealand Air Force’s (RNZAF) aerobatic team, the Black Falcons, in a rare display flight over Whanganui, in support of Whanganui Vintage Weekend this Sunday.

15 January, 2026

The display is scheduled for late afternoon, around 4.30pm, weather and conditions depending.

RNZAF pilot Squadron Leader Stuart Anderson will be flying the iconic Spitfire. The intent is for the Spitfire to join the Black Falcons as part of a Heritage formation fly past, before flying low over Castlecliff Beach for the crowd.

The Spitfire has had the opportunity to fly only one season alongside the Black Falcons, because the AFHF NZ Spitfire pilots have also been regular members of the Black Falcons team, Squadron Leader Anderson said.

“I'm excited to be part of this flight – it’s always a great privilege to display the Spitfire.”

The classic aircraft was “beautiful” to fly, he said.

“It's comfortable and effortless to control, with great performance and excellent handling. The controls are light and responsive. It’s a delightful aircraft to display.”

The Spitfire had a significant history, and few people get the honour to fly one, Squadron Leader Anderson said.

“Looking out over its unmistakeable elliptical wings, the historical significance of the Spitfire to New Zealand’s military aviation heritage is not lost on me. It's pretty cool and an absolute pleasure to present for the public’s enjoyment.”

The Spitfire flight is enabled through the generous support of the Biggin Hill Trust. Included in the trust's collection is a Grumman TBM-3E Avenger, which is not representing the AFHF NZ on this occasion, but will be appearing as a static display at this Sunday's Wanganui Aero Club Aero Day, being held at Whanganui Airport.
