Medal Ribbons

Medal ribbons are not only an important complement to the medals they are associated with, they are an integral part of the medal itself.  The use of ribbons has varied greatly since their introduction in the 18th century.  From plain ribbons used to suspend medals around the neck, the medal ribbon has developed into a multicoloured device unique to either the medal or the campaign for which it is awarded.

Long Service Award Citation Templates

Long Service Award citation templates are worded for serving military recipients. The same wording is accurate for ex-Service recipients who retired from the NZDF at any date on or after 1 December 1977.   For the eligibility criteria for earlier periods, view the specific medals page.

Medallic Principles for Operational Service

In 2000, the New Zealand Government adopted eight principles for operational service recognition. Operational service exceeds the normal peacetime service requirements and involves a credible military threat from enemy military forces, insurgents, or other hostile forces.

Research Projects

Every medal tells a story of service, sacrifice and the events that shaped New Zealand’s military history. These research projects explore the background of different honours and campaigns. They help explain how medals were awarded and the experiences of the people who earned them. Together, they offer a deeper understanding of the legacy behind each medal and the people it represents.
