The Command and Staff College is situated on the Trentham Military Camp in Upper Hutt near Wellington. Set slightly apart from the main camp, the college has its own barracks and car parking facilities.
College facilities consist of a 72-seat lecture theatre with video-conferencing and 3 syndicate rooms equipped with data projectors. Each room is capable of holding up to 20 people. The small, but well-resourced Mitchell Research Library is the heart of the College's research facilities. There is also a lounge area with Sky television and kitchen facilities to cater for course members and guests, and all college staff have their offices in the main building.
The barracks are attached to the college with course members accommodated in individual rooms with, when numbers permit, a separate study room; shared kitchen and lounge areas with Sky television, laundry, a small fitness room and an outside picnic area.
Course members are issued with their own personal notebook computer for use while on course. The college and barracks are a wireless environment giving course members access to the dedicated College LAN and internet throughout both buildings.
Mitchell Research Library
The NZDF Command and Staff College's Mitchell Research Library is available for the use of course members on a 24/7 basis.
Research staff provide a specialist service to course members and staff of the college, including tuition and support in information literacy skills and research techniques, both in print and online media.
The collection consists of approx. 6,500 monographs, approx. 50 important serial titles, as well as a growing collection of DVDs, and all of these resources are focussed on the topics taught at the college. Online access is provided to a small number of New Zealand and international databases through the main Defence Library. The strengths of the collection are in international relations, military command and leadership, military strategic thought, security and defence. Course members of the Advanced Command and Staff Course (Joint) also enjoy access to Victoria University Wellington Library’s collection of print and online resources through their enrolment with Victoria.
Course members are encouraged to arrange a social programme of their own choosing, while the College will arrange a number of organised functions depending on the course.
Functions arranged by the College include a family Bar-B-Que, a mid-course dinner, and the Graduation Dinner, to which partners are invited.
Partners and families of course members are encouraged to participate in the social events and are always welcome visitors to the college.
Recreation and fitness
The college has a fitness room equipped with a rowing machine, cross-trainer and exercise bike for course members to use when in the barracks. However, course members also have access to the full gymnasium facilities of Trentham Camp, including weights room, gym, squash courts and playing fields.
