In the past, workers in New Zealand that have had the greatest exposure are those in railway workshops, building industry, shipping industry, sawmilling and in making asbestos cement.
Studies identified that the risk of developing asbestos-related conditions was highest in machinery fitters, plumbers, welders, boiler makers, metal moulders, metal platers and electricians. Now that asbestos is no longer used as it once was the greatest risk of exposure is to workers engaged in the removal of asbestos from buildings.
The development of disease is related to dose and duration, so it is people who have a prolonged exposure as a result of working with asbestos, over many years, who are at risk. There is, however, a much greater risk of developing asbestos related conditions amongst people who are also smokers. It is strongly recommended that smokers who have been exposed to asbestos should give up smoking.
