Medals are a traditional way of recognising service in the armed forces. Medals are awarded to recognise acts of gallantry, participation in campaigns, and to reward long service. In addition, members of the armed forces are eligible to be appointed as Additional Companions, Officers or Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit for operational service.
