Other NZDF Activities

Mutual Assistance Programme (MAP) activities, together with other NZDF activities, complement efforts in the political, economic and development fields to encourage friendly and cooperative bilateral relationships with our near neighbours. They contribute to a secure and stable environment in the South Pacific and to defence engagement with some Southeast Asian countries.

Cook Islands

A RNZN Chief Petty Officer remains posted as the Pacific Patrol Boat technical adviser.

Since January 2012 there has been one RNZN Officer posted as the Maritime Security Advisor to the Cook Islands Police.  This is a role working closely with the Australian Defence Force, running the ADF Patrol Boat Programme in the Cook Islands.

Papua New Guinea

New Zealand conducts exchanges and training with Papua New Guinea on occasion.

There is one NZDF officer posted as the Chief of Staff to the PNG Defence Force.


Two NZDF personnel are deployed with the Falintil-Forças de Defesa de Timor-Leste (F-FDTL, Timor-Leste Defence Force) providing strategic and logistics advice to the Timorese military.


A NZ Army WO1 remains posted to Tonga as a Technical Adviser (Mechanical).  


Two NZ Army engineers are posted to the Vanuatu Mobile Force engineer platoon in Port Vila.  The officer is the Officer Commanding and the Staff Sergeant is the Foreman of Works.

Other activities

Malaysia (HQIADS)

One RNZN, one NZ Army and two RNZAF officers are posted to the staff of the Headquarters Integrated Area Defence System in Butterworth Malaysia (HQIADS). 

HQIADS is the permanent headquarters for the Five Power Defence Arrangement between Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand Singapore and the United Kingdom.

In addition there is one NZ Army officer is posted as instructor to the Malay Officer Training School in Pulada, one NZDF officer posted as instructor to the Malay Staff Course in Kuala Lumpur and one NZDF officer posted as a student to the Malay Staff Course in Kuala Lumpur.


A NZ Army Colonel is deployed as a Senior Military Advisor in the United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS).   Based in Nairobi, Kenya, the Colonel has regular field visits to Mogadishu and travels throughout Somalia. He provides strategic advice on defence and military issues including the training and capacity building of the Somalia Defence Force and Police, as well as liaising with bilateral partners working on security sector and defence development in Somalia.


New Zealand Defence Support Unit South East Asia (NZDSU) was established following the withdrawal of New Zealand Force South East Asia in 1989 to maintain a New Zealand presence in the region that would facilitate the New Zealand Defence Force exercising and operating with parties to the Five Power Defence Agreements (FPDA).

The role of the NZDSU is to support New Zealand's defence and security commitments in South East Asia.

There is also one NZDF officer posted to Singapore as the Defence Advisor.
