What is the NZDF contribution to Antarctica?
New Zealand contributes between 20 and 60 personnel in support operations in Antarctica. This number fluctuates depending on the time of the year (ie. Summer or Winter) and taskings.
What is their role?
The New Zealand Defence personnel in Antarctica carry out a variety roles in support of Antarctica New Zealand and the United States Antarctic Programme. Their duties include escorting visiting scientists and dignitaries, assisting with the transport of scientific equipment for research purposes and ensuring supplies at various Antarctic facilities remain well stocked. They also provide support to search and rescue operations on the ice.
Where is the contingent based?
The New Zealand personnel are split between Scott Base and McMurdo Base..
Who commands the contingent?
An experienced NZDF officer is appointed as the Senior National Officer for the contingent in theatre.
Commander Joint Forces New Zealand Major General Rhys Jones remains responsible for operational command of all deployed NZDF personnel.
