Retro arcade game, ATM, dust collector?
Actually it’s a Defence Kiosk. It won’t play games for you, it won’t dispense money, and it can collect dust. But what it does best is provide access to the Defence Information Network.
The Kiosk was created to fill the gap between those who work at desks, and those who work with other tools and don’t have regular computer access.
Linton was one of the first places to get them and while one or two machines might have been effective dust collectors they are now starting to get regular use.
With the removal of paper pay slips and an increasing desire to use technology instead of paper these machines are set to become more important.
Kiosk provides 24 hour access to the Intranet, and to your personal details. Two of the more important uses include the ability to check on pay details – which is especially important with impending changes to NZDF pay, and the ability to submit a leave application on-line via KEA.
Kiosk machines are located throughout Linton Camp, in Unit locations as well as general areas such as the Gym, Hotshots Café and the MTC. The highest use machines can be found at Kapyong Bty HQ at 16 Fd Regt. “It is good to be able do some personal admin between parades and other activities” says Bdr Richard Purvis
Using Kiosk has other benefits such as being able to access Army Welfare information about the Leave Centres, Camp UPF facilities, welfare loans, and information about the new remuneration system.
Currently a number of the Intranet sites accessible through Kiosk use e-mail to request bookings or to ask for additional information. Kiosk does not have e-mail, or the ability to read word documents, which limits its use. However planning is underway for upgrades which will make Kiosk even more useful for those without DIXS computer access.
