RNZRSA MEDIA RELEASE
6 October 2008
The 92nd National Council Meeting of the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services' Association begins today in Wellington.
The three-day meeting is the RSA's AGM, attended by representatives from most of the 176 local RSAs nationwide, and is tasked with electing Executive Officers and establishing policy. It is also a time for RSA delegates to reunite and to remember past comrades with a wreath laying service at the National War Memorial.
The last twelve months has been a busy time for the RSA with a Crown Apology to Vietnam veterans followed by the successful Tribute08; a review of Veterans' Affairs New Zealand and its placement within the New Zealand Defence Force; a historic Budget grant of $1 million for the RSA's welfare infrastructure; and a start made on the re-write of the War Pensions Act 1954. Meanwhile, the 2008 Annual Report highlights that with 125,000 members the RSA is still one of the largest voluntary organisations in the country.
All of the above will be covered by the RSA National President Robin Klitscher in his Address at the Formal Opening this afternoon. The Formal Opening will be attended by the Governor-General and the Prime Minister who will also address the meeting. Also attending will be Ministers and MPs, departmental heads and service chiefs, overseas diplomats and guests, Life Members and over 300 delegates.
