BOMB GONE! - The Navy and Nuclear Testing in the Pacific
An Exhibition in recognition of the 50th Anniversary of the H Bomb tests conducted at Christmas Island will be officially opened tomorrow night.
Media are invited to attend the function on 2 September 2008 from 6.30 – 8.00pm in the Tardis Gallery of the Depot Art Space, 28 Clarence Street, Devonport.
Naval Museum Director, Commander David Wright will host the official function, to which veterans, local identities and service representatives have been invited.
The Museum’s Exhibitions Project Manager, Rose Evans, says this exhibition breaks new ground for the museum, using personal recollections from sailors, and civilians, audio visual footage, large graphic images from our archives and immersive lighting.
“The highlight is an 8mm film found in our archives taken on board HMNZS Pukaki during the Christmas Island detonations that show grainy images of life on board, rest and recreation on Christmas and Malden islands, and of course the bomb detonations. I believe this adds a very moving and personal aspect to the exhibition,” Ms Evans says.
The ‘Bomb Gone’ exhibition runs from 30 August to 24 September and will be open to the public between the hours of 10.00am and 5.00pm Monday to Saturday, and on Sundays from 10.00 – 4.00pm.
The exhibition explores the New Zealand Governments involvement on all facets from experimentation in the 1950’s through to protest against nuclear testing in the Pacific in the 1970’s and 1990’s.
An historian will be at the gallery from 10am-12pm Tuesday and Wednesday, to answer questions throughout the exhibition.
