Renowned NZ Army Band to play at coronation of the Tongan King

31 July 2008

The world renowned New Zealand Army Band is performing at the coronation of the Tongan King tomorrow, alongside the United States Marine Corps, Royal Australian Navy and Tongan Defence Force bands.

The festivities in the kingdom include three coronation balls, a military parade, traditional dancing, a fireworks display, a rugby match and an open-air concert.

The New Zealand Army Band is well known for being creative and using humour in its performances. At their 2006 performance at the Edinburgh Tattoo the band lived up to its reputation as ‘one of the most innovative bands in the world’ with their performance which included ballet and Highland fling segments, a haka, and tributes to James Bond and Austin Powers.

At the coronation the Band will be performing in the Coronation Parade, Street Parade and concerts at the local schools.

“While we are in Tonga it is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our world-class musicians with our music and drill,” says New Zealand Army Director of Music Captain Leanne Smith.

“We are honoured to perform to our Pacific neighbours on such a special occasion.”
