The sailor who drowned alongside the Navy’s Amphibious Support Ship HMNZS CANTERBURY in the vicinity of Spirit’s Bay off Northland late yesterday morning, has been named as Able Hydrographic Systems Operator Byron James SOLOMON, aged 22 years from Auckland.
Byron joined the Navy on 12 January 2005 specialising in the Hydrographic Branch. He joined the crew of HMNZS CANTERBURY in late August 2007 and has had previous sea experience onboard the Navy’s Hydrographic and Survey Ship, HMNZS RESOLUTION.
CANTERBURY arrived home to the Devonport Naval Base around 3 am this morning and the court of inquiry process investigating the circumstances of this tragic accident has commenced.
