Assisting with Timor-Leste’s democratic elections was the highlight for 32 Royal New Zealand Air Force personnel who returned home from a three month deployment last week, says Squadron Leader Tim Evans.
The RNZAF contingent and two Iroquois helicopters were the first of four Air Force rotations that will serve in Timor-Leste over a 12 month period.
During their stay they flew close to 200 hours transporting soldiers and supplies, evacuating those in need of medical attention and assisting with delivery and collection of ballot boxes during Timor’s parliamentary and presidential elections.
A fresh rotation of 32 RNZAF personnel deployed on July 22 to support a contingent of 150 New Zealand soldiers working with Timorese and Australian forces to maintain security in the South East Asian country.
