The Manawatu Turbos will swap cheerleaders for Royal New Zealand Air Force helicopters on Thursday for their Air NZ Cup rugby match against Waikato.
Two RNZAF Iroquois helicopters will provide an aerial display over FMG Stadium in Palmerston North before dropping off school students Benjamin Elms, 9, and Kieran Horsley, 11, to tee-up the ball for the 7.05pm kick off.
A third Iroquois and crew will remain on the ground during the match for the crowd to view and interact with.
Iroquois captain Flight Lieutenant Aaron Devlin said he was confident the helicopter display would give the Turbos a boost in the opening game of the cup season.
“It’s also a good opportunity for the crowd to see the Iroquois in action and learn more about the Air Force as a career choice.”
The helicopter support isn’t the first time the RNZAF has given a helping hand to the Turbos.
Air Force and Army personnel assisted with entertainment before the Turbos opening match against Auckland last season and their match against the British Lions in 2005.
