Young aviators from around the globe are jetting into New Zealand today for the start of the annual 17-day International Air Cadet Exchange.
The exchange, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, allows seven air training corps cadets from Canada, Hong Kong, the USA and the UK to swap places with eight of their New Zealand counterparts until August 2.
The international cadets will experience adventure training, a flight in a RNZAF Iroquois helicopter, an Alpine Express train ride and a jet boat trip as they travel from Auckland to Queenstown visiting New Zealand Air Training Corps cadet units.
New Zealand Cadet Forces Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Campbell said the exchange would help the cadets gain an insight into each others cadet forces.
“It’s a great way for air training corps cadets to gain a greater understanding of each others cadet forces and cultures. The exchange will also help these young men and women experience being ambassadors for their countries.”
The exchange is organised by the International Air Cadet Exchange Association and is supported in New Zealand by New Zealand Cadet Forces, New Zealand Air Training Corps Incorporated, and the New Zealand Defence Force.
The first exchange took place in 1947 with the intention of fostering international understanding, goodwill and friendship amongst young people with an interest in aviation.
