After six months patrolling the streets of Dili, 106 members of the New Zealand Defence Force are returning home to be reunited with friends and family.

The personnel are largely from the Linton-based Victor Company and will arrive at Ohakea Air Force Base at 9.45pm on 1 June,  greeted by the Commander Joint Forces New Zealand Rear Admiral Jack Steer and their families in a small ceremony.

The remaining 40 personnel from the contingent returned on Monday 28 May.

During their time in the troubled region, Kiwi troops have helped to maintain security throughout the historic presidential elections held during April and May.

The contingent has been replaced by 140 New Zealand Defence Force personnel who departed on 25 May to continue peacekeeping duties.

Commander Joint Forces New Zealand Rear Admiral Jack Steer says he is very proud of the important contribution that the Defence Force personnel make in Timor-Leste.

“New Zealand Defence Force personnel continue to do an outstanding job in Timor-Leste, working to provide a stable environment that will allow the local population to carry on with their daily lives.”

“I am delighted to welcome back these men and women who can be justifiably proud of their efforts and feel certain that their work has made a vital difference during a notable period of Timor-Leste’s history.”

New Zealand has contributed to various United Nations and peacekeeping efforts in Timor-Leste since 1999.

The New Zealand Defence Force’s commitment to Timor-Leste at present consists of more than 170 Defence personnel and two helicopters serving with the Combined Joint Task Force, as well as two Military Liaison Officers serving with the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT).
