HMNZ Ships WAKAKURA, KIWI and KAHU, the Navy’s Inshore Patrol Craft, will berth at the Port of Nelson from Monday 14 May until Wednesday 16 May 2007.
Up to 36 local secondary school students will have the opportunity for a few hours at sea on Wednesday 16 May as part of a recruiting initiative. All ships will sail at 9:00 am to conduct a “Shop Window” – this is a series of training exercises designed to put the ships and crews through their paces, including Officer of the Watch Manoeuvres (ship driving exercises), sea safety training (fire and flood), man overboard recoveries, ship formation training and first aid scenarios – all will provide an exciting morning of activities for the students before they disembark the ships on arrival back into Nelson at 1:00 pm.
Two Nelson men will be returning to their hometown for the two day visit, onboard HMNZS WAKAKURA is Able Marine Technician Nick Hewett with Leading MarineTechnician Deon Charles onboard HMNZS KIWI.
