New Zealand Cadet Force members are to get refurbished .303 rifles, which will remain a familiar sight on ANZAC Day, says Lt Col Bob Campbell, Commandant New Zealand Cadet Forces.
While most of the Cadet Forces existing inert drill purpose .303 and SLR rifles will be withdrawn, Lt Col Campbell said “Our intent is to withdraw these drill purpose weapons later this year and select the best of them for refurbishment. We will redistribute four ceremonial weapons per unit so that cadets can carry out ceremonial and catafalque duties. The intention was always to refurbish a number of the weapons for ceremonial purposes such as ANZAC Day."
Lt Col Campbell added “In the near future all cadet units will be issued with replica Steyr rifles; to modernise the cadet force and prepare those cadets who want to move into the New Zealand Defence Force with current in-service drill.”
“We want to keep the cadets up to date and bring them into the 21st Century, while making their training more complimentary to the New Zealand Defence Force.”
