Kiwi troops prepare for Afghanistan deployment

10 April 2007

A new contingent of New Zealand troops will deploy to Afghanistan on Thursday to assist with security and reconstruction efforts in Bamyan province.

The main body of the 122-strong contingent, led by Colonel Roger McElwain, will depart from Ohakea Air Force Base at 9am on board a Royal New Zealand Air Force Boeing 757.

A smaller advance party departed on Thursday April 5.

The contingent will serve in Afghanistan for six months carrying out regular security patrols, liaising with local government and helping to distribute aid and improve infrastructure.

The new contingent will replace the 108 New Zealand troops who formed the New Zealand Provincial Reconstruction Team over the Afghan winter.
