Navy Recruiters in Dunedin have issued a challenge to the public of Dunedin – the race for the Cardboard Cup this Sunday, 18 February.
The objective is to race a cardboard boat with a crew of at least 2 people around a 200 metre course. Competitors have 2 hours to build their boat on site.
The event will take place at Bayfield Park, Andersons Bay Inlet with registrations commencing at midday. The boats will be built on site from 1:00 pm with the race commencing at 3:00 pm (note high tide is at 4.20 PM).
Once teams have registered they can begin building their boats. The boats may only contain cardboard, adhesives, tape and paint. No metals, plastics, wood or otherwise can be used. There are five different categories including the Titanic award with prizes for the fastest, flashiest and even one for the most spectacular failure.
The public are warmly welcome to come and join in the fun and bring the Cardboard Cup home!
