30 November 2006

A large number of whiskery faces gathered outside Defence House on Thursday for the Movember Mighty Man Mo-off.

Judging for the competition was a close shave but the final four winners were: the maxi-mo award for the most momentous moustache: Squadron Leader Glenn Davis, the lame-mo award for the sparse moustache: Flying Officer Ron Hunt, the show-mo award for the most artistic moustache: Flight Sergeant Craig Pitman and the stiff upper lip award for bravery: Captain Andy Warden.

Movember has been widely supported by Defence Force personnel from Devonport to Dunedin and has been especially embraced by Air Force squadrons and units throughout the country.  The event has even spread to the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in Bamiyan province, Afghanistan with around 100 men taking part.

Winner of the Maxi Mo category Squadron Leader Glenn Davis said, ”I was part of the Flymos team based in Wellington; between us we have raised about $500.”

However, the moustaches are not here to stay.  Squadron Leader Davis said,”Like most of the other participants I am looking forward to shaving it off tonight.”

Movember, which ran during November, involved men being sponsored for growing a moustache to raise funds for and awareness of prostate cancer.

The event has been a fantastic success for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand which expects to raise around $500,000.
