The Royal New Zealand Navy Museum has now established an internet presence with the launch of their website, www.navymuseum.mil.nz on 20 October 2006.
Director of the Navy Museum, Commander David Wright acknowledged the potential for a global audience. “The website will give the world the chance to discover some of the hidden treasures from our naval history, revealing the story of New Zealand's naval heritage.
“With almost 650 pages on our live site, the Museum provides a rich source of data for a range of people who may not be able to visit the physical site in Devonport, Auckland. The site includes images of many naval treasures, and photographs dating as far back as 1886.”
During the process of preparing the website, Navy Museum staff sorted through thousands of photographs and negatives held in the Museum’s archives. Among these, an intriguing image was discovered of HMNZS ROYALIST returning from Waitangi Day celebrations in the Bay of Islands, 1965.
