The Navy's last LEANDER Class Frigate HMNZS CANTERBURY, will berth alongside Queens Wharf, Wellington at 1000 on Friday 19 November 2004 for a 3 day operational visit and will depart at 1400 on Monday 22 November 2004. The visit to Wellington will be the last ever time HMNZS CANTERBURY will visit this area before her retirement in early 2005.
Open Days
HMNZS CANTERBURY will be open to the public from 1300 to 1600 on Saturday 20 November and Sunday 21 November 2004. The open days are the final opportunity for members of the public to visit and farewell the last remaining steam driven frigate in the Navy, and to witness first hand the grace and charm of the only frigate left of her era.
Background
HMNZS CANTERBURY was launched by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne (the Princess Royal) on 6 May 1970 and was commissioned into the Royal New Zealand Navy on 22 October 1971, and will be retired from active service early 2005. HMNZS CANTERBURY is the last of the Leander-class frigates commissioned into service in the Royal New Zealand Navy and her decommissioning in 2005 will mark the end of the steam turbine era.
