Following the 7.1 earthquake in Christchurch on Saturday, 4 September, the Defence Force sent a Royal New Zealand Air Force C-130 Hercules carrying Urban Search and Rescue personnel and dogs to the stricken region. That was just the start of on-going support using Defence Force people, equipment and facilities from across all services to help in the wake of the Canterbury quake.
