The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) was established by the Security Council on 24 March 2005 to promote peace and security in Sudan, the largest country in Africa. The New Zealand Defence Force contributes three personnel to the UNMIS. Two officers serve as unarmed Military Observers and one officer serves as a staff officer in the UNMIS headquarters in Khartoum.
