On 2 December 2006, more than 600 people, including his Excellency the Governor General, the Honorable Anand Satyanand, attended a memorial ceremony in recognition of the long history between the Waikato region and the Royal New Zealand Artillery (RNZA)
The Hamilton event saw the unveiling of a 5.5 inch gun which will serve as a memorial to the Waikato gunners. The 5.5 inch gun (pictured) was purchased from the Army Museum at Waiouru. The public were able to view a display of old and new military equipment including a New Zealand Army Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) and a Light Operational Vehicle (LOV) with weapons.
