Scott Base
Scott Base was constructed for New Zealand's participation in the International Geophysical Year and Commonwealth Transantarctic Expedition and was officially opened on January 20 1957.
The NZDF has sent eight people to Scott Base for the 2009 Summer Season. The team comprises four communications operators, two plant operators, a cargo handler and a Senior National Officer, who all contribute to the day-to-day running of the base. In 2009 Air Force photographer LAC Sam Shepherd (pictured below) joined the support team.
