Anzac Day 2008; Kabul. Dawn Service.

Australians and Kiwis associated with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) based in Afghanistan attended their own Anzac day service in Kabul on April 25th.

Around fifty New Zealanders were present at the Dawn Parade many of whom work for non-governmental organisations (NGO’s) or contractors.

With a uniquely Afghani background of calls for prayer occurring at the same time the service started, New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF)Lieutenant Colonel Jeremy Ramsden and Australian Defence Force (ADF) Brigadier Rick Burr made addresses and laid wreaths in remembrance.

A wreath was also laid on behalf of ex-servicemen and New Zealanders present.

The Australian contingent also compiled a short presentation of the Anzac Story to the 300 in attendance before the troops present hosted all the guests at the close of the service for a gunfire breakfast.

Major Simon Strombom who is the NZDF National Liaison Officer based in Kabul with ISAF Headquarters (HQ ISAF) said the service made him think of New Zealand and reflect on the work done by the NZDF in both the past and present.

“I think it means more when you are away from New Zealand and see familiar faces in the half light at a dawn service, who you know are Kiwis. It installs a certain pride and confidence in you. It makes you think of home, why we are here on operations, and what the day means to New Zealanders.”

The NZDF has two staff officers and a driver attached to HQ ISAF. They work on policy and procedures to assist in the clearance of mines and munitions and help in the smooth running of the HQ ISAF camp.

There are currently 812 NZDF personnel serving on operations and exercises around the world.
