WO Ken McMillan delivers blankets to the people of Dosakh village in Bamyan Province.
18 February 2008
Recently Blenheim man Warrant Officer Ken McMillan and his team delivered rice, beans, cooking oil, sugar and salt to villages isolated by the extreme weather, and as the cold eases in March and children can return to school, he will be distributing his container load of erasers, pens, pencils, books, bags, dictionaries and teachers aid packs to the villages.
Warrant Officer McMillan has been in Afghanistan since October 2007, and delivering aid and supplies is part of his Patrol team's role in Bamyan.
He says the Patrol members get a great deal of satisfaction in making these deliveries and seeing the appreciative look on the many faces they encounter.
"It's a great feeling to be on the receiving end of the smiles and thank-yous when you've handed over basic items from an international community. Afghanistan is a harsh environment to exist in, but life goes on and the people are very receptive to humanitarian aid. They might not know where on the map it comes from, but they know people out there care" he said.
