by the Kiwi Contingent
10 February 2008
Waitangi Day, February 6, in the Solomon Islands started off with Sgt McMahon and Cpl Hilliard raising both the New Zealand and Solomon Islands Ensigns at Reveille. Fortunately the flagstaff was really flexible, as on the about-turns while holding the halyards Sgt McMahon managed to see how far the flagstaff could bend and possibly saved himself the embarrassment of falling over.
The Contingent was plotted to have a group photo first up, but due to an untimely tropical downpour we had to postpone it. The remainder of the morning was used for haka practice and hangi preparation. At one stage, as a result of the previous night’s deluge of rain, our hangi was also in danger of becoming a non event, but with all hands on deck the hangi pit that once resembled a swimming pool was bailed out, and an additional supply of dry wood was secured to get the fires burning and the rocks scorching hot.
A quick lunch was had by all, then all but the hangi party moved up to occupy and celebrate Waitangi Day at the New Zealand High Commissioner's residence. Once all official guests had arrived, including the Solomon Island Prime Minister, Pte Edwards lead the NZ Pl in a rousing haka that was respected and appreciated by everyone in attendance. This was followed by the official speeches by the NZ High Commissioner and SI Prime Minister. Each speech concluded with the respective nation’s national anthem. The SI nation anthem concluded the formal part of the afternoon’s gathering, the troops were subsequently let loose to mingle with all the guests and have a quiet can of soft drink or three. The low key occasion was achieved and enjoyed by all who were involved.
Mid to late afternoon was spent by most participating in some form of physical activity and/or setting up for the evening’s main event: the hangi. The hangi was raised and was cooked to perfection. Our evening meal was shared with NZ Police colleagues and a number of invited guest’s from around Honiara and GBR and we enjoyed a quiet chat/sing in a casual environment. LCpl Long was presented with a tricycle for his outstanding efforts during the NSE’s last bike ride outing.
The evening was finished off with the GBR premiere screening of Utu. Waitangi Day in the SI was a most enjoyable day for all and a good break from our normal routine. A big thank you goes out to everyone within the contingent and in GBR who helped make the day the big success it was. It is also hoped that everyone at home had a great day also.
We hope this finds you well, happy and not missing us too much back home. Take care of each other and yourselves and we will see you soon!
