The Māori Chief, Hone Heke, had the flagstaff cut down at Kororareka in the Bay of Islands. He believed that the flying of the British flag deprived chiefs of their mana and Māori generally of their land.
1947 - 1953 Korean War
26 July 1950
New Zealand – the Government announced its decision to send Kayforce to serve with the United Nations ground forces in Korea. In nine days some 5982 men had volunteered for service.
27 July 1953
North Korea – an armistice was signed in North Korea at 1000 hours and came into effect 12 hours later. The last elements of Kayforce returned to New Zealand in 1957. 3794 soldiers served in Korea during the war; 33 died on active service; 79 were wounded, and one was taken prisoner.
1954 - 1972 Malaysia & The Vietnam War
July 1958
New Zealand – the Compulsory Military Training scheme was abolished in early 1958 after 63,661 territorials had been trained. The final basic training intake finished in July 1958.
July 1965
South Vietnam – the 161st Battery, Royal Regiment of New Zealand Artillery, consisting of nine officers and 101 other ranks, arrived in South Vietnam and was placed under command of the United States Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade at Bien Hoa near Saigon.
