New Zealand – Military History

  • - Great essays on New Zealand’s military history, and links to relevant sites.
  • - About the RSA, a selection of articles from RSA Review, Remembrance days, Anzac Day etc.
  • - Search and discover millions of NZ images, text, video and audio from the digital stores of libraries, museums, archives, communities, and government.
  •  - Includes online copies of both WWI and WWII New Zealand war histories, as well as books on the New Zealand Wars.
  • - The Commonwealth War Graves Commission site: details and places of commemoration for all Commonwealth forces who died during the First and Second World Wars.

  • - Archives New Zealand. See their reference guide for War Archives, and search "Archway", their online listing of files. Archives New Zealand also holds military personnel records for those who served prior to 1921

  • - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade – click on Foreign and Trade Policy to access their Country Information Papers. - A directory of New Zealand and Pacific websites, hosted and selected by National Library.
  • - Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies. Gives access to full-text books, Asia-Pacific Security Studies Series, and Occasional Papers.
  • - The site of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Information about countries where the Red Cross works, as well as the texts of the Geneva Conventions.
  • - A central store of country statistics from sources such as the CIA World Factbook, the United Nations, WHO, World Bank, and the OECD, and a handy way to then graphically compare nations.

Overseas – Military History

  • - The Commonwealth War Graves Commission site: details and places of commemoration for all Commonwealth forces who died during the First and Second World Wars.
  • - The London Gazette; also the Belfast and Edinburgh Gazettes. Includes WWI and WWII editions that are useful sources of medal citations.
  • - The Australian War Memorial site has photos, articles from their journal, Australian nominal rolls, the war histories, the WWI Official Histories, an online encyclopaedia, war diaries, and statistics on Australia’s military history.
  • - The National Archives of Australia website features service records from World War I.

Military Arts and Science

  • - The Rand Research Organization publishes well-researched, online reports on a variety of topics including defence.
  • - The Commonwealth Institute has a focus on international security. The site includes material on Defense Alternatives, the RMA Debate and current military operations.
  • - The Australian Defence Force Academy Library site.
  • - Highly recommended. Alabama’s Air University Library site. Includes the AUL Index to Military Periodicals. Also check out their great online bibliographies.
  • - All about Clausewitz.
