Wellington residents should be aware that the NZ Army will be firing 21 gun salutes from Point Jerningham at 1200 HRS on the following dates in 2012:

 

Monday 6 February - to honour the anniversary of the accession of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to the throne

 

Saturday 21 April - to honour the birthday (actual) of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

 

Saturday 2 June - to commemorate the 60th anniversary (Diamond Jubilee) of the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

 

Monday 4 June - to honour the birthday (official as observed in NZ) of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

 

Sunday 10 June - to commemorate the birthday of His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

 

Other gun salutes may be held throughout the year to honour visiting dignitaries.

Details of NZSAS selection candidate collapse

The New Zealand Defence Force confirmed Sunday (29 Jan) that a NZ Army soldier undertaking a New Zealand Special Air Service (NZSAS) selection activity earlier this week collapsed and remains in a serious condition in hospital.

Air Force aircraft makes forced landing

A New Zealand Defence Force spokesperson has confirmed that an engine problem with the lead Air Trainer (Red Checkers 1) required it to make a forced landing North of Waiouru at 1620 (approx) today (27 Jan).

Air Force prepares to celebrate 75th Anniversary

Military aircraft will be on show across New Zealand during the RNZAF’s 75th birthday celebrations from January to April 2012. The skies will be alive as international Air Forces combine with RNZAF air power to perform demonstrations and displays set to delight. Birthday celebrations will run from January to April 2012 across New Zealand starting with Red Checkers displays from January and concluding with Anzac Day commemorations in April.

There are currently 352 New Zealand Defence Force personnel deployed on 16 operations, UN missions and defence exercises across 12 countries, including:

E - Afghanistan (183 personnel)
F - Korea (3 personnel)
G -Timor-Leste (80 personnel)
H - Solomon Islands (8 personnel)
I -   Antarctica (19 personnel)
J - Bahrain (2 personnel)

All overseas deployments are co-ordinated and run by Joint Forces New Zealand. Once deployed, NZDF personnel come under the control of Commander Joint Forces New Zealand. For  the latest deployment statistics please see Current Deployment Information.

Postcard from the Solomon Islands

 

 

This is my very first trip in the Navy and I’m so excited to be going overseas to Rabaul and the Solomon Islands. The weather here is so hot and humid it takes some getting used to, but once you’ve acclimatised you start to love it.

 

So far in my adventure I’ve visited Mono Island in the Solomon Islands Western Province where I came across some amazing people and listened to some of their stories about the Second World War, and how it affected them and their people. I was blown away to hear them describe their experiences in such detail.  To me, it was like the events happened just yesterday.
