NZDF

Why Codify

The decision to utilise the NATO Codification System was a national decision made by the Government of New Zealand in 1969. Although only a small country which does not belong to NATO, our involvement in joint operations around the world means that there must be logistical compatibility in order to allow New Zealand forces to operate effectively far from home. Although the benefits of using the NCS are not always visible at the local or weapon system level, the international involvement of the NZDF means that the global view must predominate.

It can be argued that it is possible to support a weapon system using manufacturer part numbers! It is also possible to manage a Military base or a deployment without using the NATO Codification System. It is when you are managing several weapon systems or several deployed organisations that New Zealand starts reaping the benefits of the NCS.

The higher you are in the management chain of a service/nation/agency the more importance that must be placed on the advantages of a common Logistics language.
