As part of its on-going efforts to both improve and make better use of NATO codification data, NATO has produced the NATO Master Catalogue of References for Logistics (NMCRL).
The NATO Master Catalogue of References for Logistics on DVD or on Internet abbreviated “NMCRL”, is a valuable tool for logisticians and manufacturers in every nation. The NMCRL contains information from each NATO and sponsored countries' National Codification Bureau.
The NMCRL, even if it was originally designed for use by NATO logisticians, has proven to be an invaluable tool for non-NATO logisticians as well as for civilian companies. The product now has a world wide distribution. The main advantage of the NMCRL, in addition to ease of use and rapid search and extract, is the fact that it contains all NATO Stock Numbers assigned by the NATO and sponsored countries. It is, in fact, the catalogue of materiel used by the nations of the NATO Alliance.
The NMCRL on DVD is a WINDOWS' based multi lingual product whereas NMCRL Plus is a WEB based multi lingual application with the same plus additional features/data as on the DVD-NMCRL.
As the NMCRL matures, it potentially can be expanded with additional codification and logistics information. As an example, “user information” was added to reflect which NATO and non-NATO nation(s) is(are) registered user(s) for each NATO Stock Number on the product. “Vendor information” has been added to each NSN to complement the “Manufacturer information” that was always available. UNCCS (United Nations Common Coding System) data has been added to each NSN as further references thereby creating an effective link between these two codification systems.
Finally, the NATO Group of National Directors on Codification have agreed to the addition of “Technical Characteristics data” and “CUSTOM Codes” (Harmonized System 'HS' and Schedule B numbers) to the system which will only be available in the NMCRL plus+ online application.
The NMCRL is also extremely valuable to any civilian company wishing to do business with many Armed Forces of the world.
The access time for retrieval of codification information on DVD and Internet is minimal. What is more important is that the NMCRL contains the complete range of items used by the forces of all NATO and sponsored countries. The following data is included on the NMCRL:
- 17 million NATO Stock Numbers (NSNs)
- 34 million Manufacturers or Vendor Reference (Part) Numbers
- >2 million Manufacturers and Vendors (NCAGE, names and addresses)
- 26 million User Registrations
- 9.5 million NSNs with Characteristics Data display NMCRL Plus
- 9 million NSNs with Custom Codes display NMCRL Plus
The NMCRLDVD product is updated and issued every two months whereas the NMCRL Plus online application is updated on a weekly basis.
Modern tools require modern access facilities in order to exploit the information fully. Searches can be performed on the following parameters :

NATO Commercial and Government Entity code (NCAGE)
What is a NCAGE Code?
Each manufacturer or supplier who provides equipment or spares to the NZDF or MOD, together with other organisations who provide design control drawings, standards or specifications, or a service to the NZDF, may be allocated a NATO Commercial And Government Entity (NCAGE) code. Each country in the NATO Codification System (NCS) allocates these unique five-character codes to companies located in that country, and within the New Zealand they are allocated by the New Zealand National Codification Bureau (NCB).
A CAGE Code is a five (5) position code that identifies companies doing or wishing to do business with the NZDF or many other foreign governments or defence organisations.
Why do I need an NCAGE Code?
NCAGE records are used to hold manufacturer/supplier details such as name, address, postcode, telephone number, fax and company email address. The code is used to support a variety of systems throughout the NZDF and foreign governments and defence organisations. The code provides for a standardized method of identifying a given company or facility at a specific address – so it is possible for a large company to have several CAGE codes, one for each location. In some cases, prime contractors may require their sub-contractors to have a CAGE Code also.
The NCAGE code is used along with the manufacturer/supplier’s part number to form a reference which is held on the NATO Stock Number (NSN) record. This reference enables users of the NCS to determine who manufactures/supplies the Item of Supply.
It is therefore in the interest of suppliers to ensure that the information held in the NCAGE database is complete and up to date.
How do I get an NCAGE Code?
If you are supplying to the NZDF for the first time you will need to contact the New Zealand NCB for allocation of an NCAGE code.
Who assigns and maintains NCAGE Codes?
The NZDF National Codification Bureau at Trentham is the only authorized source of CAGE Codes within New Zealand.
Is there a fee for NCAGE Codes?
No. At this time, there are no associated subscription charges related to the assignment or maintenance of CAGE Codes.

Request for NATO Stock Number Assignment
The New Zealand National Codification Bureau (NZNCB) based within Defence Shared Services at Trentham is the sole codification bureau within New Zealand. Its primary role is to catalogue products produced by New Zealand companies for defence and government use, in accordance with the NATO Codification System (NCS).
The NCS is the NATO method of cataloguing items, which include assigning National Stock Numbers (NSNs) and capturing information needed throughout the supply chain. These NSNs are used by more than 50 countries that participate in the NCS. The countries include NATO countries, Australia and New Zealand.
A NSN is a 13-digit stock number that identifies an item in the NCS. This number is widely recognised and used worldwide.
Registered companies in New Zealand who wish to be assigned NSNs for their products can contact the NZNCB using the contact form below. Upon receipt of the relevant documents, the NSN would be assigned within an agreed timescale dependent upon the urgency of the situation.
